Your nose is one of the central features on your face, and it has a significant impact on your appearance. In many instances, subtle alterations to the size or shape of your nose can dramatically change your overall appearance. If you experience self-consciousness due to your nose, you are not alone. Fortunately, a rhinoplasty procedure can help create better overall facial harmony and help you look your very best.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that changes the shape or function of the nose. It can be done for cosmetic reasons, such as improving appearance or facial balance, or for medical reasons, such as fixing breathing problems caused by structural issues. Our team can perform rhinoplasty to address a variety of aesthetic concerns with your nose, including:

Your plastic surgeon will take the time to ensure your nose is structurally sound and functioning as it should.

Your Customized Rhinoplasty Procedure

Since the goal of rhinoplasty is to achieve greater facial harmony and an improved appearance, our team will customize your procedure to address your unique facial features and aesthetic goals. In general, there are two different rhinoplasty techniques. You will discuss each one and your options during a consultation at our Phoenix office.

During this type of rhinoplasty, an incision is made across the columella, or soft tissue between the nostrils. As the name implies, this allows the nose to be pulled back and ‘opened’ to reveal the supportive structures underneath. This technique allows for the most substantial correction but will produce minimally visible scarring.
During a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made within the nostrils. This offers the benefit of no visible scarring, but it can be a more complicated procedure because your plastic surgeon cannot easily see the underlying structures.

What to Expect from
Your Consultation

During your consultation, your surgeon will take time to understand your goals, evaluate your facial features, and discuss whether rhinoplasty is right for you. You’ll review your medical history, go over potential surgical options, and learn what results may be realistically achievable. This is also your opportunity to ask questions, talk through recovery, and feel fully informed and comfortable before moving forward.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia, meaning you will be fully asleep throughout the procedure. In some cases, local anesthesia with deep sedation may be used depending on the extent of the surgery and your surgeon’s recommendation. Your anesthesia plan will be discussed in detail during your consultation to ensure your comfort and safety.
Once you are comfortably asleep, your surgeon will begin by making carefully planned incisions. In a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, while in an open rhinoplasty, a small incision is also made across the columella. The chosen approach depends on your unique goals and the level of refinement needed.
After the incisions are made, the skin is gently lifted to expose the underlying bone and cartilage. Your surgeon will then reshape these structures by removing, adding, or repositioning tissue to achieve improved balance, proportion, and nasal function.
Special attention is often given to the nasal tip and bridge, as these areas have a major impact on overall appearance. Adjustments may be made to refine the tip’s shape, smooth the bridge, or correct asymmetry for a more natural and harmonious result.
If needed, structural issues that affect breathing, such as a deviated septum, can be corrected during the same procedure. This helps improve both the appearance and function of the nose.
Once the desired changes are complete, the skin is repositioned, and the incisions are carefully closed with sutures. A splint is usually placed on the outside of the nose to help maintain its new shape during the initial healing phase.

Add-On Procedure:
Chin Augmentation

Often, nose surgery is performed to improve the overall balance of your facial features, not simply to improve the appearance of your nose. In some instances, the most effective way to achieve this facial harmony is to make subtle enhancements to your chin as well. When appropriate, we may recommend chin augmentation in conjunction with rhinoplasty to achieve the best possible results.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Your doctor will provide all your follow-up care personally, including postoperative office visits and answering any questions you may have, day or night.

While there is no ideal age to undergo rhinoplasty, a key factor is that your nose is fully developed. The reason for this is that many of the size and shape concerns you may experience during your teenage years may go away on their own.
