What is Breast Implant Illness?

BII, or breast implant illness, describes a set of symptoms that women sometimes experience after receiving breast implants. While these symptoms are real, their link to breast implants needs further study. To date, no scientific information exists linking smooth-lined saline or silicone implants to any form of human disease.

Are textured implants safe?

Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) is a rare disorder that has been linked to textured-surface breast implants. The introduction of ALCL over a decade ago has prompted new concerns about breast implant safety, and more recently, certain textured implants were recalled from use in breast augmentation and reconstruction. ALCL usually presents around 8 years or more after implantation with fluid collection and swelling around the implant. It is curable with early diagnosis and removal of the implant and capsule. We continue to learn more with ongoing research about ALCL.

Does Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery use textured implants?

There are two different types of textured implants which are called macro-textured implants and micro-textured implants. We no longer use macro-textured implants. Micro-textured implants are not among the types of textured implants that were recently recalled.

Is breast implant illness a new development?

Questions about the safety of silicone breast implants have a long history. In the late 1980s, questions arose about the links between silicone implant leaks and autoimmune disease. In February 1992, an FDA moratorium removed silicone implants from the open market while this issue was studied closely. Over the next 14 years, over 190,000 women were studied in multiple academic centers and it was concluded there was no correlation between silicone implants and the multiple diseases in question. The FDA then reversed its moratorium, returning the implants to the open market in November 2006. Ongoing studies continue to monitor these patients to follow up on these important studies. We now have more scientific data on breast implants than any other device implanted in the human body.

I had saline breast implants done by Dr. Ali almost 16 years ago, which have been absolutely wonderful. I sought him out because all of his photos showed very natural looking breasts as opposed to a pair of round melons stuck on a chest. I was concerned about the age of my implants and scheduled a consult to see if they should come out. Dr. Ali reassured me that they still look great with no leaks or problems, as opposed to another surgeon who told me differently and wanted to “sell” me an unnecessary revision. I so appreciate his honesty and reassurance, and I will definitely return if the need arises!
