Maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly are crucial to enjoying a toned, fit figure. However, these efforts can only do so much. Our bodies are genetically predisposed to store fat in certain locations, and often these are the last places where you want the fat to go. If you have struggled to get rid of stubborn pockets of fat that do not seem to respond to your best efforts, then liposuction may be a way to achieve your ideal figure.

Why Choose Liposuction?

Liposuction can be a life-changing experience for many of our patients. Some common reasons patients opt for this procedure include:
Liposuction is a highly versatile procedure that can be performed on many different areas of the body and can be combined with other surgical procedures. Liposuction has a long history of safety and effective results, making it one of the best minimally invasive options for body contouring.

Your Customized Liposuction Procedure

We offer two liposuction technologies, and our plastic surgeons can recommend the right option for you during a consultation.

This type of liposuction uses a special tumescent solution that is injected into the treatment area to numb it and help break up fat. It also constricts nearby blood vessels, reducing bleeding and bruising during the procedure. Then, a small incision is made, and a cannula is inserted to break up fat and suction it out with a gentle sweeping motion.
Ultrasonic liposuction uses ultrasound energy to liquefy fat cells before they are removed from the body. This allows for easier fat extraction and can help improve precision in areas with denser or more fibrous tissue. The technique may also support smoother contouring while minimizing trauma to surrounding tissues.

How Is Liposuction Surgery Performed?

Liposuction is performed using either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with deep sedation, depending on the extent of treatment and the patient’s needs. Your surgeon will recommend the safest and most appropriate option during your consultation to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
A sterile tumescent solution is injected into the treatment area to help numb the tissue, reduce bleeding, and loosen fat cells. This solution also makes fat removal easier and helps improve overall surgical safety.
Small incisions are made in discreet locations, and a thin tube called a cannula is inserted to break up and suction out excess fat. The surgeon carefully contours the area using controlled movements to achieve a smooth, natural-looking result.
Once the desired amount of fat is removed, the surgeon refines the treated area to ensure even results and balanced proportions. This step focuses on creating natural contours and symmetry.
After the procedure is complete, the small incisions are closed or left to heal naturally, depending on their size. Compression garments are typically applied to support healing, reduce swelling, and help the skin conform to its new shape.

Surgery Hurt?

Liposuction Recovery

Once your procedure is complete, your surgeon will review your post-surgical aftercare instructions so you know what to expect from your recovery. Due to the use of anesthesia with your procedure, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day. It is important to get plenty of rest immediately after surgery and to drink plenty of fluids.

Make sure you take all medications as directed to manage any soreness or discomfort and to help prevent infection. You will also need to wear a compression garment for the first few weeks of recovery to control swelling and reduce your recovery time.

You will return to our Phoenix plastic surgery office for a follow-up visit in 2-3 days. We will let you know whether it is safe to return to work after this visit. In most instances, resuming work after a week is fine, but the exact timetable will depend on the specifics of your recovery. We will also provide you with detailed instructions on when you can resume exercise. It is important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure proper healing.

Your initial results should be visible within 1-2 weeks. However, these results will gradually continue to improve as your swelling subsides during the healing process. It may take several months before the final results are visible.

Add-On Procedures

Fat transfer breast augmentation is a procedure that enhances breast volume and shape using the patient’s own fat. Fat is gently harvested from areas such as the abdomen, flanks, or thighs through liposuction, purified, and then carefully injected into the breasts.

A mommy makeover is a customized combination of cosmetic procedures designed to restore a woman’s body after pregnancy and childbirth. It commonly includes procedures such as breast augmentation or lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction, depending on the patient’s goals.

Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?

Ideal liposuction candidates are in good overall health, near their target weight, and have realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedure.

Often, Dr. Ali Mosharrafa, Dr. Tamir Mosharrafa, and Dr. Martin Benjamin recommend liposuction as part of a mommy makeover to help you restore your figure to its pre-pregnancy form. Additionally, liposuction can sometimes be used during a breast reduction procedure or fat grafting.

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction offers a highly effective way to remove stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise, helping patients achieve a more refined and balanced body shape. By targeting and removing excess fat cells, the procedure enhances natural contours and can significantly improve overall body proportions.

One of the key benefits is its ability to deliver long-lasting results, as the fat cells removed during surgery do not return. With a stable weight and healthy lifestyle, patients can enjoy sustained improvements in their appearance and confidence.

Liposuction can also be customized to treat multiple areas in a single procedure, making it a versatile option for comprehensive body contouring.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

While there are some surgeons who perform awake tumescent liposuction, at Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery, we believe the experience is better and outcomes are improved when liposuction is performed with patients asleep. We work with only the top anesthesiologists to ensure that the anesthetic experience is safe and comfortable.
Yes. You do not have to be at your ideal weight to be a candidate for liposuction. Liposuction treats a condition called lipodystrophy, which is a disproportionate distribution of fatty tissue in one or more areas that does not fluctuate much with weight changes. Many patients who are overweight do have areas of lipodystrophy, and thus may be good candidates for liposuction in those areas.
While fat in our bodies may vary by site in how it responds to weight loss, for most patients, tummy fat does go away with diet and exercise. If there are stubborn areas that don’t seem to change, then liposuction is an excellent option.
We recommend that patients achieve and maintain their goal weight prior to undergoing liposuction in most cases. Avoid non-sustainable fad diets. Also, you should avoid taking any blood thinners if you can safely do so. Please check with your primary care doctor before making any changes to your medications.
Fat grafting is a procedure in which fat is harvested from one area of the body by liposuction and then injected into another area in the same individual in order to add volume and/or improve contour at the recipient site.
No. However, liposuction may not be indicated in morbidly obese patients.
Weight gain after surgery can be avoided by maintaining your pre-operative lifestyle, including a healthy and sustainable diet as well as regular exercise.
Depending on the demands of your job, most patients can return to work in a few days to 2 weeks following liposuction.
In general, liposuction is not a terribly painful procedure. Patients may require prescription pain medication for only a few days.
No. Cellulite is a difficult problem that involves more than just fat. While liposuction can significantly improve contour, it does not generally improve the appearance of cellulite.
Liposuction is very safe when performed properly. Very high volume liposuction in a single operation should be avoided. In general, up to 5 liters of removal can be safely performed in a single outpatient setting.
While some drainage following liposuction is normal, it usually stops within 24 hours.
No. Intra-abdominal fat can not be removed by liposuction. However, it will typically respond to weight loss.
While the fat cells removed by liposuction never return, the remaining cells can enlarge if a patient gains weight after liposuction. Liposuction results should be well-maintained without significant weight gain.
The big difference between traditional liposuction and laser-assisted liposuction is the way they are performed. Traditional liposuction uses a special fluid to break up fat in the treatment area, while laser-assisted liposuction uses a laser to break up the fat, making it easier to remove.
